Medical Students:
Thank you for your interest in completing a medical student rotation with us at Naval Hospital Sigonella. Our staff is enthusiastic about teaching students and the command is very supportive. Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions.
What specialties do you have at NH Sigonella and what rotations do you offer?
Our staff includes physicians in the following specialties: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Occupational Medicine, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedic Surgery, Pathology, and Radiology.
We strive to develop curricula which you will find challenging and rewarding and are willing to work with you to create a rotation to accomplish that goal. To date, our medical students have completed rotations in Surgery, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and “Orientation to the Overseas MTF”. Based on the volume and acuity of our MTF, a Family Medicine rotation that includes ED shifts and time with our radiologist is the preferred approach. This can be modified on a case by case basis.
Our innovative approach affords medical students opportunities for unique experiences. These have included time with our Commanding Officer to gain exposure to executive medicine and potential time with local Italian physicians in our TRICARE referral network to gain an appreciation for the differences between the US and Italian health care systems. This exposure gives our students insight into the intricacies of establishing supportive relationships with local hospitals.
What are the benefits of spending a rotation at NH Sigonella?
While at NH Sigonella, you will be an integral part of the healthcare team, working
one on one
with staff physicians. You will play an active role in the treatment of patients and not simply shadow providers. Being the only trainees in the hospital, you will be sought out when there are opportunities for performing procedures and when patients with interesting presentations are seen in the hospital and clinic.
How many medical students can you accommodate in one month?
We pride ourselves on offering one-on-one training experiences with our staff and maximizing your involvement in caring for interesting patients. To optimize this experience, we can accommodate up to 2 medical students per month and only one rotation per student/per academic year.
How do I coordinate my rotation at Naval Hospital Sigonella?
Once you are scheduled for a rotation, USUHS students will need to obtain no-cost (permissive) TAD orders from USUHS.
Unfortunately we are not currently able to accept HPSP students for rotations.
How do I get there and where will I stay?
As a no cost TAD rotation, you will need to coordinate your travel and pay for lodging once you arrive. Previous students have been able to get here on Space Available flights. Some have flown directly to NAS Sigonella and others have flown to mainland Italy or Germany and then taken another space-A flight, train, rental car or commercial flight to travel to Sicily.
There are two lodging options during your stay here.
BOQ (renovated 2010):
· $50 per night for a room with a queen size bed and private bathroom
· $60 per night for a suite (includes bedroom, private bath, and sitting room with a sofa bed).
Navy Lodge:
· $76.50 per night for a room with two queen size beds and private bathroom.
Note: All of the above room types may be shared by two people and have kitchenettes, and are subject to change.
There are also multiple traditional and Air B & B properties in the area that could provide a unique local experience. These will require a rental car.
